As part of our Culture Exchange Series, yesterday's session focused on Holding Space to Reflect on Recent U.S. Executive Orders and Their Implications for Work, Lives, and Well-being. Participants from diverse organizations and geographies—across red and blue states—came together, sharing a common theme of feeling overwhelmed by ongoing changes and anxious about compounding uncertainty. Amidst this, there was deep appreciation for a space that fostered connection and generosity.
During the discussion, someone shared a powerful insight:
"In the midst of so much uncertainty, we still have the ability to imagine probable futures
—three months, six months, or a year from now."
Looking at recent trends, we can recognize patterns and begin to take back a sense of control by planning ahead. Recent executive orders and policy shifts remind us that the future can unfold in multiple directions—some we anticipate, others that take us by surprise. Rather than reacting to change as it happens, Scenario Analysis provides a structured way to proactively explore potential futures and plan for them in advance.
Our ability to anticipate and prepare is one of the most valuable skills a leader can develop.
What Is Scenario Analysis?
Scenario Analysis is a tool that helps leaders and teams consider multiple potential outcomes before they happen. Instead of making decisions based on gut feelings or isolated concerns, this approach encourages structured thinking about best-case, worst-case, and most-likely scenarios.
For example, if recent funding changes impact student employment, how might that affect departments that heavily rely on student workers? Could this lead to staff shortages, shifts in workload, or a need for new operational models? By mapping out these possibilities, teams can prepare strategies in advance—rather than scrambling to respond when the moment arrives.
The Scenario Analysis Worksheet (linked below) provides a simple yet powerful framework to guide these conversations. It helps teams:
✅ Define the current reality objectively.
✅ Explore four possible futures, from minimal change to radical shifts.
✅ Assess the risks, opportunities, and resource implications of each.
✅ Foster collaborative decision-making rather than isolated guesswork.
More Than a Thought Exercise—A Tool for Community and Control
While individuals can conduct Scenario Analysis alone (or even with AI tools), its greatest power lies in shared conversation. When teams engage in this process together, they don’t just build contingency plans—they build trust, resilience, and a sense of control during uncertain times.
Instead of uncertainty leading to fear and disengagement, it can become an opportunity for clarity and collaboration. When managers proactively involve their teams in imagining possible futures, they help cultivate a culture where people feel heard, empowered, and prepared for change.
