Each June, rainbow flags wave across the globe in celebration of Pride Month—a time to honor the resilience, creativity, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ communities. It’s a time to remember history, uplift voices that are too often unheard, and recommit to a future rooted in equity, belonging, and authentic expression.
This year, as we recognize Pride Month 2025, we do so at a crossroads. We are witnessing a time of increased visibility and escalating resistance. The gains made through decades of activism—legal protections, social recognition, and broader cultural inclusion—are real and meaningful. And yet, there remain deep disparities, legislative rollbacks, and cultural narratives that still challenge the safety and dignity of LGBTQIA+ people around the world.
Pride Is More Than a Celebration
Pride traces its roots back to protest. The 1969 Stonewall Uprising, led by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, was a catalyst for the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement. Their courage reminds us that Pride has always been about claiming space, demanding justice, and forging community in the face of marginalization.
Today, Pride parades and events include joy and glitter and music—but that celebration lives alongside the ongoing work of advocacy. We celebrate because we are still fighting. We celebrate so that those who are still silenced, criminalized, or harmed because of who they are and who they love can see a light in the distance.
The Current Landscape
In 2025, the landscape for LGBTQIA+ rights remains uneven:
- Anti-trans legislation is on the rise in many parts of the world, targeting access to healthcare, education, and even public spaces.
- Queer youth, especially Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) youth, continue to face disproportionately high rates of homelessness, mental health challenges, and school-based discrimination.
- Globally, over 60 countries still criminalize same-sex relationships, and many LGBTQIA+ individuals face violence and persecution simply for existing.
At the same time, we’re seeing a growing number of companies, schools, and communities affirming gender diversity, adopting inclusive language and policies, and supporting employee and youth resource groups. Representation in media is broader and more nuanced than ever before. And queer-led innovation, artistry, and leadership continue to shape culture, technology, and social movements.
Pride at Every Level
For individuals and organizations alike, Pride Month is an opportunity to ask: How are we showing up—not just in June, but all year long?
- For individuals, this might mean learning more about LGBTQIA+ history, examining our own biases, and advocating for the rights and dignity of others in everyday conversations.
- For organizations, it means moving beyond performative gestures and toward structural change—ensuring inclusive benefits, equitable hiring practices, leadership representation, and safe, affirming environments for LGBTQIA+ staff and clients.
If you’re wondering where to start, begin listening. Center the voices of LGBTQIA+ people, especially those at the intersections of race, ability, immigration status, and class. Make space for feedback. Fund queer-led initiatives. Partner with LGBTQIA+ organizations doing grassroots work. And don’t be afraid to learn out loud—accountability is a lifelong practice.
A Celebration of Courage
Pride is, above all, a celebration of courage. It takes courage to come out in a world that still punishes differences. Courage to live authentically. Courage to fight for justice. Courage to imagine new systems and communities rooted in care, truth, and belonging.
Whether you identify as LGBTQIA+ or as an ally, this Pride Month is a call to honor that courage—not only in public displays, but in quiet choices: how we support our coworkers, how we teach our children, how we vote, how we show up in rooms where someone’s dignity is being debated.
Let this June be not only a celebration of identity but also a recommitment to justice.
In Solidarity
At its heart, Pride is about love—radical, expansive, resilient love. It’s about creating a world where everyone can thrive without hiding who they are. Where joy is not conditional. Where safety is not a privilege. Where difference is not just tolerated but celebrated.
As we move through Pride Month 2025, may we remember: Pride is not a trend. It’s a torch—passed down from those who lit it with their lives, their dreams, and their resistance. It’s ours to carry, to share, and to protect.
Happy Pride. 🏳️🌈DeEtta
